Open Call 2023

Socially Engaged Art in Jerusalem

The Jerusalem Giving Circle for the Arts is opening a new cycle of micro-grants to support artists, creators and artist-collectives from all disciplines and genres in Jerusalem. JCU is excited to announce that our 2023 micro-grants cycle will be dedicated to civic and socially engaged art.

Socially engaged practice describes art that is collaborative, often participatory and involves people as the medium or material of the work.[1]

This cycle of funding, including support from the Jerusalem Giving Circle for the Arts donors, with matching funds from North American philanthropies, will distribute 4 grants of 20,000 NIS, to help scale already existing arts initiatives and 4 grants of 12,000 NIS to launch new projects based on demonstrated needs.

Application Deadline: JUNE 26, 2023

JCU’s micro-grants have always been dedicated to raising the visibility, viability and sustainability of Jerusalem’s creative talent. With dynamic pressures and tensions that are part of life in Jerusalem, we are reframing these grants to acknowledge the importance of art production and its impact on residents and visitors to our city. We believe that focusing these Jerusalem microgrants on social engagement, advances risk-taking artworks and unconventional platforms, towards promoting innovative and interactive paradigms.

JCU microgrants are open to Jerusalem based artists, creators, and artist-collectives from all arts disciplines and genres who are committed to art as a social practice. We are seeking proposals by activists and socially engaged artists of various disciplines, who challenge power structures and think beyond the aesthetic realm.

We look forward to receiving proposals that:

  • consider ways to embrace the audience's creativity and interactivity;
  • to challenge traditional categories of art-making and advance risk-taking artworks and unconventional platforms;
  • Advance ways of being an artist in community;
  • create lasting impact in an increasingly uncertain world, giving people the tools to understand ways they can change it.

NIS 20,000: 4 grantees (to help scale already existing arts initiatives)

NIS 12,000: 4 grantees (to launch new projects based on demonstrated needs.)

(Socially engaged practice describes art that is collaborative, often participatory and involves people as the medium or material of the work.[2])
